Sahjeevan was set up in 1991 as Janvikas Ecology Cell to assist women’s collectives on their work of natural resource management in rural Kachchh. Registered as an independent organization in 1997, Sahjeevan has developed a strong gender perspective on natural resources and learnt and developed pedagogy of learning from and respecting traditional wisdom. Considered one of the first generation civil society organizations with a development perspective in Kachchh, it has been instrumental in setting up several knowledge centers which have moved on to become independent organizations. Sahjeevan has three major thrust areas at present – Drinking Water, Centre for Pastoralism and Urban Environmental Initiatives.
Under the comprehensive project called Homes in the City, the Urban Environmental Initiatives team of the organization is responsible for establishing a decentralized drinking water system and sanitation system for urban poor in the electoral wards number 2 & 3 of the city, and participatory solid waste management program throughout the city through conducting awareness programs, recycling plastic bags and reusing wet & kitchen waste as cattle feed. Working in collaboration with the Bhuj Nagar Palika, Sahjeevan has partnered with Arid Communities and Technologies for Decentralized Drinking Water program, with Hunnarshala for Sanitation program, with the Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan for Participatory Solid Waste Management program and SETU (Kutch Nav Nirman Abhiyan) for formation of area and ward committees with citizens.
