ACT strives to strengthen livelihoods in arid and semi-arid regions by improving access to technological and institutional solutions to resolve ecological constraints, in collaboration with communities.

ACT is a professional voluntary organization based at Bhuj, Kachchh district in Gujarat, India. Registered under Societies Act, 1860 and Charitable Trust Act, 1950, ACT is founded by a group of likeminded young professionals interested in improving the quality of development delivery by Government and Non-government agencies. ACT stands by the following values in pursuing its mission:

Nature and focus of work

  • Extend technical support to individuals, institutions and communities working in the field to undertake innovative and action-research oriented projects following an agenda set by communities demand.
  • Implement innovative and novel projects like community aquifer management.
  • Build a knowledge-base of technological and institutional solutions for natural resource management in arid and semi-arid regions.
  • Create Geographic Information Systems enabled database of natural resources and associated knowledge systems of Kachchh and other arid parts of Gujarat.
  • Engage in policy advocacy at various levels through collaborative activities with Government and Non-governmental agencies
  • Mobilize financial resources through developing proposals for grants, providing consultancy services, sale of publications, organizing training activities.

Emerging additional core activities

  • Encouraged by consistent demand from other Government and Non-governmental Agencies, ACT decided to include training and capacity building as its core activity.
  • Urban watershed management is included as the other core activity following the critical role it played in restoration of Hamirsar Lake in Bhuj.
  • ACT is emerging as an important hub to monitor groundwater management and salinity intrusion in Kachchh district. By virtue of several studies done and projects implemented, ACT has been able to build rich knowledge base in this particular field.

Hunnarshala Foundation, a section 25 company as per the Companies Act of India,  was formed after the massive earthquake of Kutch in 2001 with objectives to promote eco-friendly construction practices, low energy building designs & technologies which are scientifically validated through research initiatives. These technologies have glimpses of local culture and aesthetics. The knowledge of these technologies is transferred to the local artisans who further link it to the contemporary market.
Hunnarshala also works towards environmentally sustainable towns and villages which promote local management and control, empowerment of the local community and ensure dignified living for citizens by providing basic housing and services.
Hunnarshala responds immediately and appropriately to disasters by providing guidance to the affected communities through owner driven construction approaches.

The organization was set up in 2003 after working on the rehabilitation of the Gujarat earthquake. The company has been set up with participation from NGO’s like Kutch Navnirman Abhiyan, educational and scientific institutions like CEPT, IIS, CSR Auroville and Companies like HDFC, Gruh Finance and Transmetal.
Hunnarshala has worked on disaster rehabilitation in India (Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kashmir and Bihar), Iran, Indonesia and Afghanistan. In this process it has supported the building of over 30 thousand Interim shelters and about 12 thousand permanent reconstructions. HSF has helped develop technical guidelines for housing on eco-friendly building material and provided training on earthquake resistance structures to engineers and masons in these countries.
Hunnarshala has studied, developed and built using environment friendly technologies especially in earth and bamboo and designed and built several sewerage recycling plants. Hunnarshala has also built several institutional buildings including schools, offices and Indigenous Tourist Centers managed by communities using these technologies.
Hunnarshala has expertise in restoring heritage buildings. Recently Hunnarshala has restored heritage buildings in India and abroad.
In Bhuj city Hunnarshala has worked on waste water management systems and worked on urban housing and services issue for the economical weaker sections of the society.

Kutch  Mahila Vikas  Sangathan , is a Kutch – Gujarat based women’s organization which was initiated and promoted in  1989 by state government agencies like GSHDC, department of women -child and  a non-government NGO Janvikas . Now also a partner of the Homes in the City program, KMVS ‘s emphasis   has been empowerment of  women . For this KMVS  has been organizing and mobilizing rural and urban women of Kutch into local collectives capable of independently working towards developing women’s ability and confidence, promoting women’s role as  catalyst to address issues concerning their lives, communities and areas.

Sahjeevan was set up in 1991 as Janvikas Ecology Cell to assist women’s collectives on their work of natural resource management in rural Kachchh. Registered as an independent organization in 1997, Sahjeevan has developed a strong gender perspective on natural resources and learnt and developed pedagogy of learning from and respecting traditional wisdom. Considered one of the first generation civil society organizations with a development perspective in Kachchh, it has been instrumental in setting up several knowledge centers which have moved on to become independent organizations. Sahjeevan has three major thrust areas at present – Drinking Water, Centre for Pastoralism and Urban Environmental Initiatives.

Under the comprehensive project called Homes in the City, the Urban Environmental Initiatives team of the organization is responsible for establishing a decentralized drinking water system and sanitation system for urban poor in the electoral wards number 2 & 3 of the city, and participatory solid waste management program throughout the city through conducting awareness programs, recycling plastic bags and reusing wet & kitchen waste as cattle feed. Working in collaboration with the Bhuj Nagar Palika, Sahjeevan has partnered with Arid Communities and Technologies for Decentralized Drinking Water program, with Hunnarshala for Sanitation program, with the Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan for Participatory Solid Waste Management program and SETU (Kutch Nav Nirman Abhiyan) for formation of area and ward committees with citizens.

Kutch Nav Nirman Abhiyan, popular as Abhiyan, is a collective of grass root local NGOs and was founded as a response to devastating cyclone in Kutch in 1998. The objective of the network is to synergize human knowledge, physical and financial resources to collaborate towards Development which is governed by community initiatives. The network encourages self – help development, especially within marginalized communities, integrates traditional wisdom with new technologies and innovates and balances issues of human rights with human responsibilities.

Urban Setu established in the year 2010 is an initiative of Abhiyan. “Setu” in Gujarati means “a bridge”, it summarizes well the role of this program which aims primarily to bridge the gaps between the citizens and the government departments as well as mobilize the communities.
Urban setu facilitate and empower urban citizens with information with regard to:

  • Government  entitlements
  • Government schemes
  • services delivery at various government departments
  • NGO contacts and links

It also contributes in building a platform through community mobilization for various stakeholders having interventions in Urban Slum regions and facilitate formation, knowledge sharing and empowering the citizen based groups.
